Vibeke is a character in The Last Kingdom television series.
She is Brida's daughter and a seer who chooses who Brida should sacrifice to the gods.
Biography[]
Season 4[]
Brida lifts Storri's infertility curse by killing him. Later, believing she is pregnant with Cnut's child, she calls to the god Frigg to confirm her pregnancy by burning a strip of birch bark with a cross of her blood. She is about to tell Cnut but they are interrupted by his riders who tell him that Uhtred has kidnapped his two sons and Cnut the Younger is dead. In his fury Cnut advances his army to fight Uhtred, despite Brida pleading they stick to their original plan. Cnut loses and Uhtred follows him into the woods to avenge Ragnar's death. Brida overhears Cnut admit to encouraging Aethelwold to kill Ragnar so she kills him. The Welsh capture and enslave Brida despite her begging Uhtred to give her a warriors death which he refuses.
Wealas: Brida is noticeable pregnant and chained in a hole in the ground with little to no food and water. Sigtryggr invades and kills her enslavers freeing Brida. Brida convinces Sigtrygrr to conquer Wessex.
Wessex: After successfully seizing Wessex, a siege continues for 30 days. Getting desperate, Uhtred offers himself as a hostage in exchange for Edward's two sons knowing Brida will want revenge for her enslavement and that Sigtryggr may be willing to negotiate. Despite promising Brida she could do with Uhtred what she wants, Sigtryggr delays saying she can have him after he is done with him. Uhtred sees Brida is pregnant and tells her he didn't know and asks if it's Cnut's. Brida replies it is hers alone. Sigtryggr does not give Uhtred to Brida because they have negotiated peace and he and Stiorra, Uhtred's daughter, like each other. Brida feels betrayed and declares her son (referring to her unborn child) will be loyal to her like no man has ever been before. She then goes to the woods and gives birth beside a tree.
Season 5[]
Iceland: Vibeke and Brida are living in Iceland. Brida appears gentle and affectionate with Vibeke. Brida has taught Vibeke the ways of the gods and believes she is a seer or volva, appointing her to decide who will be sacrificed. While blindfolded, Vibeke wanders amongst the crowd of Brida's followers and holds the hand of a man who then walks into a volcano vent. In the distance the core of the volcano spits lava, which they interrupt as a sign from the gods that they are ready to return to England. Brida, Vibeke, and followers rush to the boats and depart.
Eoferwic: With the help of Sigtryggr's brother Rognvaldr, Brida invades and siezes Eoferwic. Vibeke sits in the background playing with runes and feathers as Brida executes people in the square and gathers converted pagans to save them from christian lies. Brida gathers a dozen women and again appoints Vibeke to choose who to sacrifice. Vibeke wanders the crowd holding peoples hand and then moving on while one of Brida's men cuts their throats. After five women have been sacrificed, Vibeke holds Rognvaldr's hand. He argues against the gods decision saying he needs to be here to do the work of the gods. Brida says the gods have spoken but that 5 is enough, and settles on cutting his cheek instead of killing him.
Uhtred, Sigtryggr, Finan, Sihtric, Osferth, and Aethelstan sneak into Eoferwic through an old Roman sewer system and free Sigtryggr's men to fight Brida and her followers. During the battle Vibeke in a trance wanders towards a tree, not noticing that a sword swipes by her hair or that there is a dangerous battle happening around her. Brida notices and pulls her aside and tells her to hide until she comes to find her. Vibeke climbs onto an old crumbling roof and begins to stumble. Both Uhtred and Brida notice and run to her aid. Despite Uhtred ready to help her down the safetest route, Brida tells Vibeke to come towards her and jump onto a nearby roof. Vibeke doesn't know what to do, but Brida reassures her she will catch her and the gods will protect her so trust them. She jumps towards her mother and almost jumps onto the roof but falls to the ground and dies. Brida carries Vibeke's body as they retreat from Eoferwic.
