Uhtred of Bebbanburg or Uhtred Uhtredson was a minor character in both The Saxon Stories novel series, and The Last Kingdom television series. Uhtred was the older half-brother of Uhtred and the son of Ealdorman Uhtred. He was killed by Earl Ragnar, and his name and position as heir to Bebbanburg, was given to his younger brother.
Biography[]
The Saxon Stories[]
Uhtred was born around 850. His mother was the first wife of Ealdorman Uhtred of Bebbanburg and she died shortly after giving birth to him. His father later remarried to a Mercian noblewoman, Lady Æthelgifu, and he had a younger brother named Osbert in 857. Osbert's mother also died while giving birth to him, and so his father remarried to a woman named Gytha. He had several younger half-siblings but none of them survived their first year.
Uhtred is 17 years old at the start of "The Last Kingdom". He is the oldest son and heir of Ealdorman Uhtred of Bebbanburg. Uhtred is present together with his father, brother, and his uncle Ælfric on a hunting trip where they see the ships of Earl Ragnar.
After returning to Bebbanburg Uhtred is sent by his father to investigate the Danish ships. His father warns Uhtred not to attack the Danes. Uhtred and twelve men ride to a settlement by the river Alne where the Danish ships had sought refuge. By feigning inferior numbers the Danes lured Uhtred and his men into the village where they swiftly killed them.
The Danes learn of Uhtred's home, and on the following morning Earl Ragnar brings the decapitated head of Ealdorman Uthred's son to Bebbanburg and tosses it in front of the gate to the fortress. His name and position as heir to Bebbanburg is given to his half-brother.
The Last Kingdom[]
Season 1[]
Bebbanburg, Northumbria; After Ealdorman Uhtred spots Viking long ships off the coast, he sends Uhtred to scout the long ships and specifically instructs him to not engage in any combat. Uhtred disobeys and taunts the Vikings from the shore. Earl Ragnar kills Uhtred, and rides to Bebbanburg, only to toss his bloodied head in front of his father. As a result, Osbert becomes the new Uhtred and is baptised for the second time in front of the common folk so that they may recognise him as the new heir of Bebbanburg. ("Episode 1.1")
Season 4[]
Uthred tells his friend and fellow warrior Finan that Beocca held him in the ramparts when Earl Ragnar arrived at Bebbanburg with the head of his brother.
