Siege of Winchester was an event which occurred in The Saxon Stories novel series, and The Last Kingdom television series.
The siege had occurred in 878, when the Dane army, led by Guthrum and Ragnar the Younger, assaulted and sacked the capitol of Wessex, Winchester. They killed thousands of civilians and forced King Alfred to flee to the Somerset marshlands.
