Biography[]
The Saxon Stories[]
Lord Uhtred was the ealdorman of Bebbanburg. He and his first wife had Uhtred during 848/849 AD, but she sadly died shortly after giving birth to him. He later remarried to a Mercian noblewoman, that union produced a son; Osbert in 857. Osbert's mother also sadly died while giving birth to him. Lord Uhtred then remarried to the woman Gytha, who was much younger than him. He had several children with her but none of them survived their first year.
In "The Last Kingdom", Danes raid Bebbanburg during the year 866. He sends his oldest son, also called Uhtred, to scout the raiders, but this leads to him being killed by the Danes. The Danish leader Earl Ragnar arrives at Bebbanburg, where he throws Uhtred's severed head on the ground. With his oldest son dead, Osbert is now his surviving son, and as such, re-christened as Uhtred and becomes the heir of Bebbanburg.
The Ealdorman Uhtred seeks to avenge his oldest son's death, but is killed during the failed attack on Eoferwic during the Siege of Eoferwic. The young Uhtred is captured by the Danish Earl, Ragnar the Fearless.
The Last Kingdom[]
Season 1[]
Whilst outside the Bebbanburg gates, Lord Uhtred's son Uhtred (named Osbert) spots Viking long ships off the coast. At this point in time, the Danes have already raided English cities and monasteries, so Lord Uhtred quickly retreats to the Bebbanburgh fortress to raise the alarm. He dispatches his first son, also named Uhtred, to scout the long ships and specifically instructs him to not engage in any combat. Uhtred disobeys and taunts the Vikings from the shore. The leader of these oncoming Danes, Earl Ragnar the Fearless, is then seen riding Uhtred's horse to the gates of Bebbanburg, only to toss the bloodied head of the younger Uhtred in front of his father. As a result, Ealdorman Uhtred has Osbert baptised for the second time and renamed as Uhtred in front of the common folk so that they may recognise him as the new heir of Bebbanburg.
Ealdorman Uhtred declares war and goes after the Danes, leaving Uhtred and his brother Ælfric behind at Bebbanburg, however Uhtred disobeys orders and follows behind. Danish and Northumbrian forces meet on the battlefield. Lord Uhtred leads the offensive attack as the Danes wait patiently. The English forces rush downhill but their blows are rendered useless by the ever-effective Danish shield wall. The second half of the Danish army comes out of hiding to close in on the English from behind, trapping them between two shield walls. The English are slaughtered and Lord Uhtred is stabbed in the neck by a Dane soldier. Little Uhtred then rushes the battlefield in a futile attempt to kill a Dane, and is instead captured as a slave along with a young Saxon girl named Brida. ("Episode 1.1")
Season 5[]
After Uhtred finally reclaims Bebbanburg, he remembers many people apart of his life. He recalls the death of his father, with his father's death being shown in a flashback. ("Episode 5.10")
