East Anglia; Young Cnut and his brother Esgar run through the woods, taking cover behind trees. Young Cnut is captured by Brida, who holds a knife at his throat and asks if he wants her to show him mercy. He nods his head yes. She reminds him that mercy is for Christians and the only appropriate action when captured by the enemy is to take his own life. They are joined by Cnut, who tells Brida that the boys must like her. The women and children of East Anglia are shipped off to the settlements for the winter. They must be hidden away while the men go to war. ("Episode 4.1")

Tetsworth, Mercia; Hæsten, Brida, and Cnut lead their army into Tetsworth. They'll rest there for the night and attack at first light. Catch the Mercians sleeping in their beds. Cnut calls young Cnut and Esgar over. He wants them to leave with Hæsten, who will take them north until the campaign is over. ("Episode 4.2")

Mercia (?); Hæsten, younger Cnut and Esgar cross paths with Uhtred and his men. He questions why Uhtred is so far from home, joking that he rides once more to save Lady Æthelflæd. He then tells Uhtred that he's free to pass, however, he also welcomes Uhtred and his men to join them. After a fight between Hæsten and Uhtred, during which time Hæsten revealed that Cnut is the reason Ragnar was killed, Uhtred let Hæsten go, but decided to keep younger Cnut and Esgar as leverage. Uhtred orders Finan and Sihtric to tie the boys up. One makes a run for it while the other tries to stab Finan, but they are both captured. ("Episode 4.3")

Ægelesburg, Mercia; Bjorgulf leads his army into Ægelesburg, killing those who survived the initial attack. He demands that they hand over Æthelflæd. Uhtred goes to the roof. Finan and Sihtric follow him with knives held to young Cnut and Esgar's throats. He tells Bjorgulf to leave or else the children will die. Bjorgulf refuses to leave, and so Uhtred tricks him into thinking that he cut off the head of young Cnut by throwing the body of one of the dead Mercian kids off the roof. In fear that Uhtred will kill Esgar, Bjorgulf retreats. Young Cnut and Esgar are then set free by Sihtric as they have served their purpose. ("Episode 4.4")
