Ædgyth of Wessex (later, Ædgyth of Northumbria) is a character in The Saxon Stories novel series, and in The Last Kingdom television series. She is the daughter of Edward and Ecgwynn. She has a twin brother, Æthelstan, but they were separated soon after birth.

Biography[]

The Saxon Stories[]

Ædgyth is Edward's daughter and Æthelstan's sister.

In "War of the Wolf", when Æthelstan is king, he marries her to Sigtryggr, after the death of Stiorra, in order for him to secure Northumbria.

Season 3[]

Winchester, Wessex; Æthelwold tells Edward that some ealdormen aren't too happy that he made a whore of a young girl and left her pupped. Edward defends her by retorting that she isn’t a whore. ("Episode 3.1")

Alfred and Ælswith have commanded that he get a divorce after they found out that Edward and Ecgwynn secretly married. Bishop Erkenwald states that Edward’s wife has chosen to enter a nunnery, and therefore, the marriage is dismissed. Edward asks what of his children. Alfred and Ælswith tells him that they will be cared for. ("Episode 3.4")

Steapa and Bishop Erkenwald confiscate the twins Æthelstan and Ædgyth from their mothers and maternal grandmothers arms. ("Episode 3.4")

Season 4[]

Winchester, Wessex; Ælswith asks Hild about Ecgwynn, on what is happening to her now. Hild informs Ælswith that Ecgwynn has been forbidden from seeing Æthelstan and Ædgyth. Ecgwynn sees her daughter on occasion but she hasn't seen her son since he was ripped from her arms. ("Episode 4.2")

Trivia[]

  • This character has been based on a real historical figure, it was perhaps Edith. It is unclear who the daughter of Edward and Ecgwynn actually was. It is however known that she married Sitric Cáech.
  • The name Eadgyth comes from Old English name Eadgyð. The name is made up of the words ead, which means "wealth, fortune", and gyð, which means "war".
  • Ædgyth is a noble; she was born a princess of Wessex to King Edward, she later marries the lord of Northumbria.
